Hello Embedded Professionals, Engineers, and Developers! Welcome to In Case You Missed it, the weekly news show all about Embedded technologies and solutions from Embedded Computing Design.
It’s Friday August 7, 2026, I’m Ken Briodagh, Editor in Chief of Embedded Computing Design and these are our top stories this week, all on a bit of a Smart Home trend this time.
First up, GE Appliances has announced that it is set to begin integrating microcontrollers, Wi-Fi connectivity solutions, and analog components made by Texas Instruments (TI) into its next generation of connected appliances. The company said it will use TI semiconductor chips in one third of all the products manufactured in the company’s new plant in Louisville, Kentucky. Production is expected to begin in 2027, according to the release.
Our next story comes from element14, an Avnet community, which has announced a smart home and healthcare design challenge for engineers, makers, and technology enthusiasts to develop and build smart home or healthcare systems focused on enhancing everyday living environments and personal wellbeing. Participants are encouraged to create prototypes that address physical or mental health needs or introduce intelligent solutions that make daily life at home easier. The prizes include a Google Pixel Watch and Philips Hue Outdoor Camera for first prize, a Pixel Watch and a blood pressure monitor for second, and a blood pressure monitor for third place. Applications are open through August 16. Selected participants will have until October 18 to complete and submit their projects.
Next, we’re featuring an explorative piece from our own Rich Nass on the NXP Smart Home display lab in Austin Texas. Rich gives you the lowdown on the whole experience, and he took away some good insights, namely “The experience highlights a broader trend that's becoming increasingly apparent in applications like the smart home, namely that it’s not about what you can do with individual devices, but what can be achieved though complete system integration.”
In our Embedded Insights segment, Ken’s Trends, Ken talks about Smart Homes (as a way into talking about systems-level design). This segment is brought to you by the upcoming AI at the Edge Day.
