Next-generation healthcare systems promise to deliver more targeted treatments, improve patient outcomes and lower costs. This vision is becoming a reality as surgical robotic systems transform into intelligent digital ecosystems that integrate imaging, visualization, and data. By leveraging the right data, at the right place, and at the right time, there is tremendous potential for these systems to enable more targeted and effective treatments. However, the industry is faced with significant challenges to accelerate and realize the potential of intelligence and autonomy across the device ecosystem. The increasing complexity of data connectivity impedes time to market, scalability, and evolution of these systems to incorporate the latest technologies and interoperate with other devices and systems. State-of-the-art software connectivity is needed to enable the development of flexible systems and address the demanding and simultaneous requirements for reliability, cybersecurity, and performance. New technologies have emerged that allow the disparate devices of surgical robots, imaging systems, and critical care systems to all work together as one integrated system, in real-time. This presentation will explore the industry challenges and the role of the distributed software framework in accelerating the development and evolution of next-generation surgical robots and intelligent medical devices.
