In a series of recent announcements, Wind River has upped its offerings in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. First, the company announced an enhanced and expanded Helix product portfolio. Second, it has created a services offering that can assist designers who are attempting to create and deploy IoT applications. Helix works at all ends of the IoT spectrum, including secure and managed intelligent devices at the edge, through gateways, across the network, and up into the cloud.
On the device management side, Wind River has added application and data services in the cloud to its operating systems and IoT software platform through a tool called the Edge Management System, which serves as a cloud-based technology stack. The stack is an integral part of Intel’s IoT Platform, thereby creating the hardware-software hooks needed to implement a system. The software is integrated with the company’s VxWorks RTOS, Linux, and Intelligent Device Platform.
The agents built into the software bring secure cloud connectivity to facilitate data capture, rules-based data analysis, and response, configuration, and file transfer. Specifically, these integrations provide device-level execution capabilities, remote management and provisioning capabilities at the gateway, and cloud-based software updates. The result is seamless interaction with edge devices and simplified device-side application development.
The goal of the professional services offering is to bring IoT concepts to markets where safety and security are imperatives. The company will assist customers in configuring IoT systems and getting them to market faster with reduced risk and lower cost of ownership. The list of services include an IoT startup package, device agent configuration, application/agent interfacing, cloud applications development, and IoT safety and security requirements support.
Finally, Wind River announced that it’s expanding its operating system suite with the availability of the VxWorks microkernel profile. The microkernel profile is a tiny-footprint RTOS that can be deployed to create IoT-ready devices, such as sensor hubs, microcontrollers, and wearables, as well as High Performance Embedded Computing (HPEC) platforms to address intensive data processing.
