Navitas Semiconductor, a power semiconductor company focused on gallium nitride (GaN) power ICs and silicon carbide (SiC) technology, has announced its high-power GaNSafe ICs achieve automotive qualification for both AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101, showcasing GaN’s next inflection into the automotive market.

Torrance, California. Navitas Semiconductor introduced what it has billed as the world’s first 8.5 kW power supply unit (PSU) powered by GaN and SiC technologies to achieve 98% efficiency, for next-generation AI and hyperscale data centers. The 54V output PSU, optimized for AI applications, complies with Open Compute Project (OCP) and Open Rack v3 (ORv3) specifications while leveraging GaNSafe and Gen-3 Fast SiC MOSFETs arranged in 3-phase interleaved PFC and LLC topologies.

Fast-charging an end device like a smart phone in under 10 minutes using Gallium Nitride (GaN) power components is awesome. However, it’s not as great as it sounds, for a few reasons.

Dubbed GaNSense Control, the devices feature high-frequency quasi-resonant (HFQR) flybacks supporting QR, DCM, CCM and multiple-frequency, hybrid-mode operations, with frequencies up to 225 kHz.

The last Tear Down I did, the Meta Quest 2 VR headset, got lots of fanfare. As an end product, it’s super cool. And from a design perspective, I was awed by what the engineering team was able to accomplish.
