The requirements for today’s microcontrollers are increasing, with growing demands for improved power efficiency, real-time networking capabilities, and reliable processing and compatibility for vision and audio tasks. Applications relying on these must often shift away from traditional MCUs and toward modern microcontrollers that are capable of handling higher-performance computing, AI acceleration, and more.

STMicroelectronics has plans to acquire NXP Semiconductors’ MEMS sensors business which is primarily focused on automotive safety and industrial applications. The portfolio consists of automotive safety sensors, both passive (airbags) and active (vehicle dynamics), as well as monitoring sensors such as TPMS, engine management, convenience, and security. For industrial applications, the portfolio includes pressure sensors and accelerometers.

STMicroelectronics announced new STM32U3 microcontrollers (MCUs) with power-saving innovations that aids in the management of smart connected technology in remote locations. The new STM32U3 series delivers enhanced power-saving chip design with AI-enhanced tools, and the latest Arm Cortex-M33 core running up to 96MHz. These MCUs are designed for IoT devices operating for extended periods without maintenance and with constrained energy from a coin cell, ambient solar, or thermoelectric source.

In the last few years, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers have become important components in many medical and healthcare products. Among others, accelerometers are implemented in non-invasive, minimally invasive, and invasive medical devices.

There are several reasons for this impressive penetration of MEMS accelerometers into medical applications. The early accelerometers were bulky, with high power consumption, analog output, and without any embedded intelligent features. However, there have been breathtaking advances in these accelerometers in the last few years. These advances have not only accelerated the implementation of accelerometers in a large number of medical products but also enabled a variety of innovative use cases in diagnostics, monitoring, and treatment.
