Micron Technology and Tata Communications announced a collaboration to create a worldwide cellular connectivity solution to simplify and accelerate global deployments of IoT devices. Per the companies, the solution will be powered by a virtual SIM (eSIM) that offers flexibility and a scalable alternative to physical SIM cards. The cloud0based eSIM will operate with Micron’s Authenta™ Key Management Service (KMS).
Coupled with the KMS, Tata Communications’ MOVE™ Global IoT Solution will create an en-to-end solution for zero-touch onboarding of the IoT devices to cloud services.
The solution, per a company press release, will enable:
- Highly scalable IoT security
- Seamless global connectivity
- On-demand cellular subscription
- Pay-as-you-go flexibility
OEMs must tightly pair device identity to the IoT service during manufacturing and while using physical SIM cards. This is to prevent interaction of insecure devices and services, resulting in vendor lock-in. With Authenta’s authentication, it decouples IoT service security needs by allowing late binding of third-party certificates.
Due to Authenta’s silicon root of trust, a level of protection for the lowest layer of IoT software is provided. It uses cryptographic identity and security features engrained into flash memory. In order to enable compatibility with the new SIM, OEMs need to install Authenta flash; no secure key injection or added secure elements are required.
