Wireless charging is becoming all the rage lately, especially when it comes to smartphones. But imagine if you were able to wirelessly charge your electric vehicle? Can it be possible? In some cars, it’s already happening…

As time goes on, manufacturers are turning our cars into more self-sufficient entities. Conceptually, for an electric vehicle (EV) to charge itself, the system would have to depend on cloud connectivity and data sharing. This would allow the parking facility, charging system and driver to be constantly connected to each other, as long as a reliable data connection exists between every component.

To bring this all to fruition, Hyundai and Kia have joined forces on developing the Automated Valet Parking System (AVPS), which combines autonomous driving and wireless charging.

It will be designed to give users the ability to instruct their EVs to go to wireless charging stations of their own. Once the battery is fully-charged, cars will be programmed to automatically move to a vacant parking space in an effort to avoid overcrowding.

All the driver would have to do is send a simple request to the car and it will autonomously return. See how it all works in the video below:

When can we expect this to happen?

Not for a while. After Hyundai and Kia launch their level 4 autonomous vehicles in 2025, then the wireless charging may be applied once the technology is perfected. However, while we’re still a little ways away from level 4 autonomous tech, wireless charging is already being offered on select BMWs; Audi will soon follow suit.
