We’re always on the lookout for the “next big thing.” That “thing” has actually been around for more than 200 years (depending on your source). It’s the automobile that I’m referring to, and while it’s pretty long in the tooth, the inroads made by embedded developers over the last few years has been astounding. And there appears to be no end in sight. Almost every developer I talk to lately is trying to tap that market.

One of the interesting facts about this market is that developers, especially on the software side, are spending an increasing amount of time in the latter stages of design. Code needs to be delivered with fewer defects, applications need to be secure from hacking vulnerabilities, and products must conform to critical safety and security standards.
