Samsung, Xilinx Partner for Worldwide Commercial 5G Deployments

Xilinx announced Samsung will be using the Xilinx Versal adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP) for worldwide 5G commercial deployments.

Xilinx announced Samsung will be using the Xilinx Versal adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP) for worldwide 5G commercial deployments. Xilinx Versal ACAP provides a scalable platform that may be able address multiple operator requirements across multiple geographies.

Versal ACAP is a multicore, heterogeneous platform that works within 5G to perform real-time signal processing and beamforming capabilities.

“Samsung has been working closely with Xilinx, paving the way for enhancing our 5G technical leadership and opening up a new era in 5G,” said executive vice president of Samsung Jaeho Jeon, in a press release. “Taking a step further by applying Xilinx’s new advanced platform to our solutions, we expect to increase 5G performance and accelerate our leadership position in the global market.”

5G needs beamforming because it allows for data streams to simultaneously be transmitted to multiple users using the same spectrum. However, this technology requires compute density, which is where Versal ACAPs come in.

At low power consumption, it offers compute density to perform real-time, low-latency signal processing. Per the company, the AI Engines which are part of the Versal AI Core series, are comprised of a tiled array of vector processors, making them ideal for implementing the required mathematical functions offering high compute density, among other things.
