How Extending TSN Over 5G And Other Wireless Networks Will Improve The IoT

Wireless TSN links enable access to end devices and extend the range of wired TSN networks. It is designed to bring time synchronization, bounded latency, reliability, and resource management to networks to enhance performance.

As 5G is being rolled out in wider areas, this allows for a lot of improvements in consumer products, industry, transportation, and a whole range of applications. It allows for TSN, or Time Sensitive Networking, to be deployed. How does this benefit companies and manufacturing? Here's a look at what it can do.

What Is TSN?

The term 'Wireless TSN' refers to the wireless network IEEE 802.1. This network extends the benefits of wireless TSN over wireless media.

If you want to use TSN applications, you don't need your entire network to be TSN capable. You just need to have a TSN domain, where all the devices are TSN capable and so you can gain the benefits of it within the whole network.

How TSN Will Improve Networks

With wireless TSN and 5G on the horizon, it's interesting to look at how they can be used in both commercial and personal settings. Here's some ways that TSN will change the way the IoT works.

Bringing in more efficient robots: There's already been huge advances in robotic work in the last few years. With TSN, it paves the way for even more efficient robots. This is especially true for robots made for manufacturing.

With smart factories becoming more sophisticated than ever, TSN can help with the flexibility of robots working on the floor. These need better mobility and flexibility, and wireless TSN can enable that. If robots are wireless TSN capable, they can be reconfigured and re-routed in real time, without them having to be connected to a wired network.

Live media transmission will change: During a regular live show tour, there are going to be thousands of yards of cable to set up and tear down every night. That leads to time consuming set ups and the degradation of the cables over time.

Wireless TSN is being looked at as a way to replace this set up, making it easier to set up and less likely to break down. As venues start to adopt 5G, it will be sensible to switch to a wireless TSN system to set up the stage.

Creating smart grids: In today's current electrical grids, there's a serious demand for security. This has led to research in how wireless TSN can improve practices.

Implementation in consumer electronics: Gaming has been a sector where consumers have always demanded the very best and latest tech, and with TSN on the horizon the next wave of gadgets are going to be just that.

This is especially true with VR gaming, where low latency video streaming is a must. The video must react with the user's head movements in real time, as any lag could result in sickness in the player. With a TSN network, that latency can be reduced significantly. That improves the experience for the player and makes it more enjoyable.

Change May Not Come Right Away

Wireless TSN, like 5G, is still very new tech. As such, we're not going to see real advancements using it for a while to come. This is especially true as 5G isn't native 802 LAN tech, so it can't be directly integrated with Ethernet TSN standards.

However, the tech is being worked on, and as more devices capable of using both 5G and TSN emerge, there's going to be a real jump in the way communications work. With so many potential applications, it's well worth waiting for TSN to come into its own.
