It’s Friday May 2, 2025 and I’m Ken Briodagh, Editor in Chief of Embedded Computing Design and these are our top stories this week.
First up, PICMG, a consortium to develop innovative open standards in embedded computing, announced its CompactPCI Serial Revision 3. This is the third revision of the standard, and the organization said it is intended to ensure future viability and scalability. CompactPCI Serial was originally developed as an extension of the open CompactPCI standard to meet the demand for robust, modular and powerful computer systems in industrial and embedded applications. Developers who want to build applications for harsh environments in industry, aviation or more can now download the new specification from the PICMG website and start designing immediately. PICMG member companies are also already working on their first products based on the new specification.
Our next story comes from Peter Winston, founder and CEO of Integrated Computer Solutions, who has written a post about AI-Powered Code Modernization and how his team uses Machine Learning to Transform Legacy Systems. He writes about three of his developers, all using one AI tool, and chasing one shared goal, and how they led to entirely different—and equally valuable—solutions. You don’t want to miss this one.
Finally, we’re featuring a field report from our own Assistant Managing Editor, Tiera Oliver, who is out at the annual NI Connect conference. There, during its keynote, Emerson announced hardware and software enhancements to its portfolio that address the growing complexity in test. Tiera’s excellent article outlines all the innovations Emerson outlined, including the upcoming release of a new version of SystemLink software and third-party hardware support for InstrumentStudio via custom plugins. The rest of the conference featured live demonstrations, new products, technical expert panel sessions, and a renewed focus on technology innovation, including academic research presentations. Check out our coverage as it comes in.
