Perhaps the greatest obstacle in making the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) viable is the challenge of securing complex systems comprised of connected, small, resource-constrained devices. In order to implement an effective security solution, there are several questions to consider: What are the vulnerabilities and attack surfaces? What are the limitations of the system? What solutions are available and what are the benefits and tradeoffs of each option?

Louis Parks, CEO of SecureRF, and Vinai Sundaram, CEO of SensorHound, are well acquainted with these questions and, as some of the industry’s leading experts in IIoT security, they are pioneering technologies that meet the rigorous security requirements of the IIoT at the edge. Both will be holding 30-minute training sessions at the upcoming IIoT University to help IIoT professionals find the answers to these questions.

Parks has served as a consultant to the White House and Homeland Security on border technologies and is a Board Director of AIM North America. His company SecureRF uses quantum-resistant group theoretic cryptography protocols to provide identification, authentication, and data protection to low- or no-power IoT devices. Parks’ training session will address the protection of edge devices running on 8- and 16-bit processors.

Sundaram holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Perdue University and has received numerous awards for his academic research. He co-founded SensorHound, which offers automated operations monitoring software that alerts users to software malfunctions and intrusions as they occur. In his training session, Sundaram will discuss why traditional security solutions don’t work for the IIoT, explore the pros and cons of available solutions, and help attendees identify what solutions will work best for their IIoT application.
