Taoglas Boost Technology Improves Antenna Performance

Patent-pending Taoglas Boost technology provides up to 2 dB performance increase for onboard antennas.

Taoglas announced its Taoglas Boost antenna design that will provide up to 2 dB performance increase. This innovation will focus more on designs with shorter ground planes, allowing IoT and other device designers to bring to market a broader spectrum of smaller devices that can now meet certain stringent carrier certification requirements.

Taoglas Boost will alter the electrical delay in the ground plane with a new technique to improve efficiency at the lower frequencies (600 to 1000 MHz) used mostly by cellular applications. The modification can be implemented in the “keep-out” area of the antenna, causing minimal impact to the designer in terms of antenna integration.

As Taoglas Boost is implemented in a customer device, a tuning feature is integrated into the design to provide quick optimization. The result is an improvement up to 2 dB of antenna efficiency on the same ground plane length compared to traditional technology. This improvement may be beneficial in meeting over-the-air (OTA) requirements for size-constrained devices commonly found in M2M and IoT applications and can be implemented with any onboard antenna.

“As a leading RF and antenna provider for IoT, Taoglas has long seen the demands smaller device sizes and increased power consumption place on antenna design,” said Jeff Shamblin, vice president of engineering, Taoglas. “This patent-pending breakthrough, developed by our team of engineers, tricks the antenna into seeing a longer ground plane, hence increasing antenna efficiency. Taoglas Boost is provided at no additional cost for use with Taoglas antennas, providing our customers 1 or more dBs of performance for free.”
