In this fifth installment of Engineering Heroes, sponsored by Wind River, we’d like to introduce you to Samer Mabrouk, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Depending on who you’re conversing with, the “Edge” of the IoT may have different meanings. For the sake of this article, we are going to define it as that last computer that sits between the sensors (where the data is collected) and the Cloud. It’s very close to where the data is obtained and where the action must occur.

Among industrial applications, ESG is becoming more and more important. It’s also one of the key attributes of the NISE 3910 PC from NexAIoT. Based on an Intel12^th /13^th generation Core i3/i5/i7/i9 processor, the fanless platform is aimed at industrial IoT, Edge, and AI applications that demand high CPU and graphics performance. For example, AI and machine learning, or anything that involves Graphics computing and inferencing are prime candidates for the robust platform.

AMRs, or autonomous mobile robots, are becoming more common in the workplace. They can be a perfect fit for industrial and automation applications, given the right controller and software stack. On the hardware side, the system could include a host of sensors, including cameras, radar, lidar, etc. Then on the software side, you obviously need to link al those components together, and be sure you can communication both internally and externally.

From afar, you may not notice a big difference between the railroad cars today and those that ran down the track a couple of decades ago. However, you can be assured that when you peel back the skin, there are massive differences that have occurred, specifically with respect to the on-board computer systems.

In this fourth installment of our Engineering Heroes series, sponsored by Wind River, we honor Levi Zima, an RF Microwave Engineer. Levi was born in Oregon, spent several years of childhood in Wisconsin, and currently resides in Florida, just north of Orlando.

Industrial automation applications are often demanding, requiring specific reliability, durability, and long-term support features. Embedded vision and processing applications benefit from hardware that is highly configurable with versatile integrated circuits that aid in the customization of a wide range of applications. Embedded vision, sensor fusion, industrial automation, medical imaging, IoT devices, and AI and machine learning are applications and technologies that are capable of processing data and accelerating applications with the help of an FPGA.

Artists all over the world and in every industry seek to enhance and improve their work with the aid of digital tools. The developers of those tools must therefore create simple but powerful apps to meet end users’ needs – such applications have to be fast, accurate, and accessible if artists are going to be successful with them.

As always, the world is moving towards more modern mobile computing devices designed to support high-quality media capabilities such as high dynamic range (HDR) within Android devices. While still used universally, SDR is not as equipped to support a broader color spectrum, brighter highlights, and deeper shadows.

The heart of any industrial platform is what drives the end application. Without a strong heart, performance will suffer.
